David made his Burghley Horse Trials debut this weekend, with Gillian Jonas’ Shannondale Quest. A few blips in their dressage brought a score of 37 putting them in 44th place overnight – about half way through the leaderboard.
Mark Philips’ cross country course was enormous, and presented a multitude of questions, which many struggled to answer and more than 30 combinations withdrew, retired or were eliminated during the day. There were time faults all round and the ground crew were kept busy fixing the frangible pins. Only one combination made it clear inside the time – Piggy French and Vanir Kamira, following up on their Badminton win earlier in the year.
David and Shannondale Quest ran solidly round the big track to go clear putting them in 21st place overnight. He passed trot up on Sunday morning, very much on his toes and looking fantastic (well done Jade!).
And finally the showjumping. A technical track although not as big as it could be but with a couple of tricky combinations. Shannondale Quest not quite as on his toes as he appeared in the trot up, and perhaps suffering from his efforts across the country, and had three down for 12 faults. They finished in 23rd place, a very impressive result for a first time round this notoriously big 5* track.
