When David first tried Galileo a couple of years ago, he proclaimed him “a lumpy thing who didn’t ride nicely”. He now refers to him as “a proper athlete, who makes everything feel easy”.
Galileo was produced to CIC* by Joy Dawes, who brought him to David to take on from there. Their first outing together resulted in a second place (admittedly at Novice, at West Wilts, David’s home from home….) but was followed by a series of top five placings, leading to third at the British Novice Championships at Gatcombe. A win at Welllington Intermediate and 10th at Pau CIC2* finished off the 2018 season. Along the way ownership was transferred to one of David’s long-standing owners, Gillian Jonas.
This year Galileo has excelled himself. David took him ‘along for the ride’ to Saumur in the spring for the CCI3*S – and finished third. He stepped up to Advanced in July at Aston le Walls – and won his section! He stepped up again when David took him to Haras le Pin, again as companion to his Nations Cup horse, and he wowed the crowd coming second in the CCI4*S – a better result than any of the Team GBR Nations Cup rides!
“His cross country was awesome for an eight year old, and altogether a fabulous result at his first 4* event” said Maggie.
He is still growing into himself and can only get better. Blenheim CCI4*S 8/9YO in September is his next stop – let’s see how this ‘freak of nature’ copes with the huge atmosphere.
