Despite the truly hideous weather – although the four year old class had rain as well as a howling gale – our two ‘babies’ performed very well in the Burghley Young Event Horse Five Year Old class at Badminton on Wednesday (6 May).
Christine Lees’ Ferro Point (Ferro) was a bit nervy in the wind but soon settled down to a calm dressage test and smooth SJ round but unfortunately had the last pole down.
Tim and Alice Page’s Dunge’s Don Perignon (Don) was also a bit jumpy in the warm up but he too focused on his dressage and jumped clear SJ. Both achieved a total mark of 64 points (out of 90) and just missed the ‘call back’ for the top 10.
After tea and cakes in the lorry, David took Miss Caruso (Tilly) for a final run-through of the dressage test, and they did not look at all out of place in the practice arena, surrounded by the 4* combinations in final preparation.
Bright and early on Thursday morning (7 May) they cantered into the extraordinary atmosphere of the Badminton dressage arena to ride the 4* test as guinea pig for the judges. They had a couple of mistakes on the flying changes and were given a mark of 50.7, which would have placed them =39th (out of 81) at the end of the two days of dressage. But just for a moment, they were in the lead!
David’s comments: “It was a brilliant feeling and good fun. At the end, as I was leaving the arena, I just wanted to do it all over again, and go on and do the cross country.”
