We had a fantastic weekend at Aston le Walls, coming home with four top ten finishes. The Aston team had done a remarkable job with the ground, and were continuing to water parts of it during the competition as the day got hotter, which is not only going above and beyond but is also quite a skill!
Three of our horses were running in their first Advanced event: Ferro Point – a bit tense in her dressage but jumped a straightforward and quick double clear to finish 5th; Dunge’s Don Perignon – an unfortunate pole on a tight turn SJ but another storming XC round to finish 12th; and Carneyhaugh Rua (Roly) who did the best dressage of the three but had a couple of poles down to finish 20th. The show jumping track was very much up to height while XC had some significant technical questions, as you would expect at this level.
Sunday was Intermediate day for two of Joy Dawes’ horses. Galileo, who David has been riding for a month or so, scored well in his dressage (27.1) but had an unfortunate pole SJ. He was one of the fastest XC to finish 4th. Droughtville Mike (Eclipse) finished 10th with another quick XC round but picked up some time faults show jumping.
David was delighted with all of them – such good performances from the Advanced horses in their first run is exciting and promising for the future, and Galileo is moving up the grades steadily and to plan.
